Joanelle - Fire & Freedom
My connection with Joanelle started with a fun boudoir shoot she did with a friend. During that session, she told me she was going through a divorce and wanted to do a photoshoot to mark the end of that chapter and step into a new one, confident and free. My immediate response was, "Girl, I got you!"

We met at Alviso Marina Park in San Jose, a location we chose because the door-like archways felt so symbolic of stepping into a new chapter. Joanelle arrived beaming with confidence, wearing a sexy outfit with a stunning afro hairstyle that glowed in the golden hour light. She also brought her wedding dress, ready to finally let go of that part of her story.
Initially, she wanted to set the dress on fire. We both knew this would be irresponsible in dry California and would likely get us in trouble with park rangers. So, we decided to approach the symbolic "burning" with some help from generative AI in Photoshop, creating the illusion of flames to capture that visceral moment of release.
She celebrated by first symbolically setting the dress on fire, then toasting her new beginning with sparkling wine before finally kicking the dress away. I remember watching her face, a mix of power and peace, as the weight of that chapter visibly lifted from her shoulders.
By the end of the shoot, she was simply glowing. This wasn't just about getting pictures; it was her own ritual of healing. It was the moment she gave herself permission to be happy, to be whole, and to step into her new life a little lighter and a lot more fierce.
